Stay Focused.

July 5th, 2016

One of the most annoying problems when working is the inability to concentrate on what you’re doing.

Suddenly you’re more interested in that lint stuck in your keyboard or that there’s something dark around the light bulb above you; you’re just more aware of what’s happening around you. The next thing you know, there you are staring at the blinking cursor on the screen, time has ran out, and you still haven’t finished the thing you’re supposed to be working on.

It’s a common occurrence especially if you’re doing work that requires you to sit in front of a computer or a desk for a long period of time. Staying focused might be challenging but it is not impossible.

 Get Comfortable

Once you’re losing focus, deal with your needs. Get a cushion for your seat, drink water, have your toilet break, stretch your legs, make yourself comfortable. Once you’re okay with your environment, you’re less likely to find a distraction.

Indulge Your Distraction

While working, you notice a speck of dust on your screen.  You try to ignore it but it keeps stealing your attention. So, you wipe it off. Then you notice something else is dirty. Next thing you know, it’s been an hour and you’re cleaning your whole desk. Do it. Go ahead and indulge your distraction, set a timer and STICK TO THAT. It’ll serve as a break for you and keep your mind off the work you’re doing. Once you get back to your job, your mind would have been refreshed.

Stop Everything Else
Close that Facebook tab; switch off the TV; put that phone away; remove all the causes for distraction. With all those gone, you’re less likely to drift away from what you’re working on.

Focusing on what you’re doing won’t be as difficult if you put your heart and soul into it. Do it with passion and you’ll do just fine.
