Signs that an Online Job Offer is A Scam

February 10th, 2017

Have you ever spotted a job ad that seemed too good to be true but you really need the money so you click on it only to find it a bit sketchy?

With the rise of online jobs, it is not uncommon for it to be used for tricking or scamming people. So, do not worry, your anxiety is understandable; and if the company who posted the offer is real, then they would not hesitate to answer your questions to assure you of its legitimacy.

But how do you know if they’re scamming you? Here are some signs that exposes the job ad you’re checking out could probably be a scam:

  1. You do not need to undergo any type of interview or assessment

The fact that these recruiters have not set a standard for those they hire should already raise red flags. Any real company should at least know who is working for them and if they could produce what the company needs from them. That is, unless, the applicants will not actually be working for the company and therefore do not need any kind of standard to follow.

  1. You are being asked to pay upon application

If you answered a job ad and they immediately state that they need you to wire money or pay a certain amount for something, you should really reconsider your application. They need you to work for them, why would they ask you to pay first?

Some would also gather your credit card information. Definitely, do not submit it and simply walk away from the application.

  1. Salary details are not clear

Once you’ve ruled out the first two signs but the recruiter does not give a concrete process as to how you will be paid, you should be alarmed. They should be able to explain to you how, when, how much you are going to earn. Legitimate companies set schedules for these and will assure you that you will get paid.

Do these signs show on the recruitment advertisement that you have received? Be wary!

If you would like to further check on the legitimacy of the company you’re applying for, try searching up the name of the company with the word “scam” or “rip off”. If the name comes up then stir clear of it (and the others on the list too).

Always remember to check the company first before you submit your personal information. Good luck on your job search!
